UNITED NATIONAL CONGRESS supporters cheered each time a positive result was announced at the party’s Rienzi Complex headquarters in Couva last night.
The most noise came when the result for Felicity/Endeavour was announced.
The UNC won that area with 1,906 votes, followed by the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) with 1,883 and the People’s National Movement 40.
Supporters said they were happy that “the heartland of the UNC” was held and not lost to the ILP.
ILP political leader Jack Warner won the Chaguanas West by-election last July and Felicity was a big factor in the victory.
Shortly after 9 p.m., Minister of Food Production Devant Maharaj showed up wearing his UNC jersey. Election result co-ordinator Joe Sirju was enthusiastic about announcing the wins but not so thrilled when the defeats had to be revealed. Supporters blamed the ILP for splitting the vote.
Maharaj told the Express: “I feel very good about the results we have gotten so far. No doubt when you look at the figures, the split vote spoiler party seemed to have done its damage there.”
He said the UNC had two main reasons to celebrate—calling the election regardless of what the results may have been and the introduction of “proportional representation with regards to the aldermen”.
Maharaj said the party has been “rethinking” its strategy since the Chaguanas West by-election in July and “learning from each electoral experience” was ongoing.
Rudranath Indarsingh, Minister in the Ministry of Finance, said he too was proud of his party’s success. He said persons retained confidence in the UNC and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, which showed in the voting process.
And according to Works Minister Suruj Rambachan, the only reason the ILP was formed was to destroy the government. However, he said the election result showed that citizens still had faith in the People’s Partnership government.
Rambachan said the ILP was to be blamed for any loss the government suffered. Rambachan said the UNC did well, adding that the ILP has “ slipped very badly” in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation as compared to Warner’s victory in the Chaguanas by-election.
Rambachan said: “The only motive Jack Warner has is to break up the government but God is a good God.”
He said United National Congress expects to win the St Joseph by-election next month.
