THE brother of Imam Rasheed Karim, president of the Pluck Shop Association and United National Congress (UNC) activist, was stabbed to death on Wednesday night.

The murder brings the toll for 2014 to 208 compared with 180 at June 26 last year.

Barnett Azim, a father of three, was attacked as he was walking away from an argument with the man who occupied an apartment in a building owned by the family.

Karim said the suspect, who owed several months rent, was usually abusive to members of the family and other tenants living in the building.

The incident occurred at the family’s apartment building at Cacandee Road, Felicity around 10.10 p.m.

Karim said his brother was attending a wake in the village when he received a call that the tenant was breaking open a door to get into his apartment.

“The man’s wife locked the door and went away and when he came home he was breaking open the door to get inside.

“Another tenant heard and called my brother. He doesn’t usually go outside after six, but since he was outside he decided to go,” he said.

Karim said the tenant had several months rent outstanding. He said his brother had asked the man to vacate the apartment, without paying the balance.

The Express was told a closed circuit television camera at the building showed Azim running away from the suspect.

Azim lived at Azim Avenue, Cacandee Road, Felicity.

He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Karim said the family had several encounters with the abusive tenant. He said other tenants had also complained about the man.

“My brother doesn’t usually go out and collect money. He was the patriarch of the family. When anyone had problems they would go to him. I would describe him as a walking help. He was enthusiastic about life,” he said.

Karim said he was officiating at a pre-Ramadan service at the mosque when he got the tragic news. “I didn’t know it was so serious. We went after the suspect and then we heard my brother was in the health facility,” he said.

Karim said his brother had already cleared his schedule to facilitate fasting for Ramadan.

The 38-year-old suspect was detained by police last evening.

Azim’s funeral took place yesterday afternoon in Felicity, with the Islamic service officiated by his brother.

Central Division police are investigating.
