A man who police believe was involved in a series of robberies in Central Trinidad was wounded in an alleged shoot-out with officers on Thursday.
And a search is on for four other suspects who escaped during the gunfire.
Police said a team of officers from the Central Division, including Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham, Corporal Ali, Constables Bhagoo, Brown and Gomez, were on mobile patrol along London Street, Longdenville, when they observed five men sitting on the roadway near some tall bushes around midday.
The officers drove alongside the men and stopped the vehicle, but the suspects began running in different directions, police said.
Police said two of the suspects opened fire on the officers, who fired back, hitting one in the left ankle.
The Longdenville man collapsed on the roadway, dropping his firearm.
The other suspects escaped.
The injured man was taken to the Chaguanas District Health facility where he was treated and transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
He was listed in stable condition last evening.
Senior Superintendent Deodath Dulalchan and Inspector Williams visited the scene.
