Taxi-driver on rape charge gets $.1m bail

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

A TAXI-DRIVER charged with raping a 13-year-old was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail.

Rayon Neil Ramdhanie, 21, was denied bail on Monday after he gave two addresses in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington asked for verification.

Yesterday the court was told the police spoke to Ramdhanie’s father, and a letter from the Housing Development Corporation, a utility bill and a bank document were handed over.

Defence attorney Shawn Teekasingh said there had been reclassification of houses along the street in Pleasantville, but both addresses given the previous day represented the same location.

Wellington placed the taxi-driver on $100,000 bail to cover the both charges.

Ramdhanie was charged with having sexual intercourse and committing grievous sexual assault against the girl on March 27 at Ste Madeleine.

The indictable charges were laid by Constable Mohammed.

Teekasingh asked for cash bail, but Wellington denied the request.

Ramdhanie was ordered to return to court on May 6.
