Police are continuing investigations into the death of 14-year-old Murchanna Lavia who was killed by a male relative on Wednesday.
Police yesterday said Murchanna’s relatives, as well as some pupils of the Providence Girls’ Catholic School, which the dead girl attended, were expected to undergo counselling in the immediate future.
Police reported that on Wednesday night, Lavia, a form three pupil was in the living room of her Upper Stoer Street Extension, Petit Valley, home in the presence of the 15-year-old male relative.
Around 8 p.m., the relative reportedly pulled out a firearm he had acquired from a person he knew and was flashing it about. The weapon was loaded, and it discharged when he pointed in the direction of Murchanna.
The teenager dropped to the ground, clutching her chest, and the police as well as the emergency health services were immediately notified.
Murchanna was rushed to the St James Medical Complex where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The 15-year-old male relative was detained by the police, and up to late yesterday, was said to be assisting Western Division Officers, as well as officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, with their enquiries.
Police sources said investigators had not officially declared Murchannah’s death as a murder, noting that thus far, evidence was pointing to the fact that, while the suspect may have been in illegal possession of a firearm, the killing, according to initial statements, was accidental.
