THE CHILD who was allegedly sexually assaulted 62 times over the past five years by an 80-year-old man has attempted suicide.
The 13-year-old was last week hospitalised after ingesting a poisonous substance at her home.
Two Fridays ago, the girl went to the Moruga Police Station with her mother and made a report alleging she had been sexually abused since 2006.
Cephas Callendar, of Basse Terre, Moruga, was later charged by Constable Ricky Nicholas with 62 sexual assault offences.
It was during Callendar's reappearance in court yesterday that it was learned the girl had fallen unconscious last Thursday and had later been admitted to hospital.
Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne ordered that upon the girl's release from the medical institution, she is to stay with her mother at a new location.
Callendar, who was represented by attorney Russell Pena, was placed on $500,000 bail, with two persons to stand as surety.
Last week, Callendar was denied bail after objections were raised by the prosecution over the living arrangements for the child.
On that day, Quintyne requested the child's mother be present at yesterday's hearing.
She and one of the child's aunts turned up before the court, and Quintyne ordered that the girl be placed in the mother's care after she is discharged from hospital.
The case was adjourned to February 10.
