THREE men who allegedly robbed a jewelry store on High Street, San Fernando of over $100,000 in cash and jewelry were caught minutes later by police.
The suspects, aged 21 and 22 years old, of Laventille and Maracas, were arrested as they ran from the scene and got lost on the back streets of the city.
At around 11.30 a.m. the suspects entered Karishma’s Jewelry Store. One man pulled a gun on employees and the owner of the business place, and announced a hold-up.
Police said one of the suspects jumped over a counter and began grabbing gold chains and earrings which were emptied into a bag. One of the thieves pushed the owner of the store into another room and demanded cash. The owner handed over an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
Police were contacted and Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Southern Division Zamsheed Mohammed led officers of the San Fernando CID and Police Station, and Highway Patrol to the scene.
The police officers detained the three men at Mon Chagrin Street, despite two changing clothing, and one hiding in the backyard of a resident.
Police recovered a .38 revolver and six live rounds of ammunition.
The suspects were expected to be placed on identification parades during the week in connection with similar crimes. Witnesses to the police response were high in praise of the work of the officers.
