Tongue in cheek remarks from Vernella at HIV symposium

Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin made some tongue in cheek remarks at an International Women’s Day symposium hosted by the Ministry at City Hall, Port of Spain, yesterday.

Alleyne-Toppin addressed the audience at the event and also Minister of the People Glenn Ramadharsingh.

The Minister began by encouraging women to build and not tear each other down.

“Ah want allyuh in Trinidad and Tobago to try and hold it down...and especially sisters, fuh yuh sister..doh knock down yuh sister please,” she said.

She said that she was never tested for HIV/AIDS.

“Two children born, one born April and one born July both ah we pregnant same that’s HIV not so? So I never test eh..ah cyah tell all yuh that ah prefer abstinence...so I am abstaining...Allyuh believe that? Ent they say politicians does lie,” said Alleyne-Toppin.

“But when I abstaining here in Trinidad I don’t know who abstaining in Tobago...ah trying to talk sense...but it difficult,” she continued.

She then added, “In Tobago they does say we doh want no condom at all...I don’t know how allyuh spreading that in Tobago..man and woman, they want everything just so,” she said.

“So you could convince people that is the same kinda thing...well yuh go try it on me and see I come from long time, I am quite senior...big girl now,” she said.

“Watch me 62 and-a-half-years-old ..You could imagine how much thing pass between that...and I start late yuh know,” said Alleyne-Toppin.
