Trini gets 13 years jail in the US for downloading child porn

A 45-year-old citizen of Trinidad and Tobago was sentenced in an El Paso federal courtroom on Monday to nearly 13 years in prison after he admitted to downloading more than 200 child porn videos, according to a report in the El Paso Times.

US District Judge Frank Montalvo sentenced Garvin Cadogan to 151 months in prison for receipt of child pornography, and 120 months in prison on each of two counts of possession of child pornography. Cadogan was also given a 36-month sentence for making a false claim to US citzenship.

Montalvo ordered Cadogan to serve each sentence concurrently, or at the same time.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations arrested Cadogan on February 23 after discovering that one of his computers had downloaded and shared videos featuring the sexual exploitation of minors.

Cadogan initially told agents he was a US citizen when, in fact, he was a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. Cadogan used the identity of a disabled elderly Pennsylvania man to obtain work in El Paso, secure a driver's licence and an apartment, and meet his basic needs, federal prosecutors said.

The Pennsylvania man's Social Security benefits were terminated because Cadogan used the man's identity for employment purposes.

"Due to the loss of benefits, the victim almost lost his house and had to count on his family for food and basic necessities," federal prosecutors said in a news release.

Cadogan pleaded guilty to the child porn and false claim charges on October 19.

"This individual (Cadogan) was impacting other people, not just children," said Dennis A Ulrich, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso. "He took advantage of the system, and wreaked havoc on the life of a disabled United States citizen, whose identity he stole."

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety assisted in the investigation against Cadogan.
