TWO suspected thieves were shot by a San Fernando businessman during a robbery.
The suspects—a 34-year-old Tarouba man and a 27-year-old La Horquetta man—were detained by police in Mon Repos. One suspect was shot in his groin and shoulder, while the other was shot in his abdomen, neck and shoulder.
According to a report, at around 8.45 a.m. the two suspects went to the businessplace of wholesale distributor Winston Wei Li Chung at Hobson Street, and pointed a shotgun and a handgun at him and his employees.
Police said the thieves dragged Wei Li Chung into his office and robbed him of an undisclosed sum of money. They then fired a shot at the businessman and ordered him to open a vault.
Wei Li Chung complied and unlocked the vault, and the thieves took out the cash.
Police said Wei Li Chung then drew his licensed firearm and fired several shots at the thieves, hitting both. The suspects ran out of the businessplace, and escaped with the money.
Police were called in and Snr Supt Cecil Santana and ASP Zamsheed Mohammed and a party of police officers of the Southern Division Task Force, Operations Unit, Canine Unit, San Fernando and Mon Repos CID responded.
Police arrested one of the suspects near the crime scene, and recovered a homemade shotgun with two rounds of ammunition. For over an hour police officers searched for the second suspect, and found him under a house on Dottin Street.
Police said the suspect had bathed and changed into a new pair of pants at the home of someone he knew. The second firearm was not recovered.
Both suspects were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where they were expected to undergo surgery.
