POLICE on Sunday arrested a Venezuelan national with five guns and 12 rounds of ammunition, at Icacos Village, Cedros.
The arrest was credited to a combined team of officers from the South Western Division Task Force, Penal CID, and Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearm Bureau (OCNFB).
Between 2p.m. and 3.30p.m. the officers conducted surveillance work on the southwestern peninsular, and took into custody a 33-year-old Venezuelan who had a bag. In that bag were three shotguns, a pistol and revolver, and the ammunition.
Icacos is a fishing village on Trinidad's southwestern tip, and is less that 15 kilometres at the closest point, to the Venezuelan mainland.
The area has long been a contact point for drugs and guns being smuggled into the country from South America.
The suspect is being questioned today by police trying to find out the origin of the weapons, any possible buyer, and the intended use.
