THE police officer who was caught on film slapping a man before arresting him and taking him away in a police vehicle was taken into custody yesterday morning.

Up to late evening, the officer was being held at the Port of Spain Criminal Investigations Department (CID), where investigators were in the process of carrying out identification parades.

The officer was arrested at his home in South Trinidad by officers attached to the Professional Standards Unit and later handed over to CID detectives.

Police said if the officer was pointed out during the identification parade, he would be taken before a Port of Spain Magistrate today charged with assault.

Following the airing of the video on CCN TV6's UReport on September 3, Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams said the incident would be thoroughly investigated by both the Professional Standards Unit and the Police Complaints Authority.

Williams also condemned the actions of the officer, saying: "The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service will never support officers behaving in such an unacceptable manner. I see it as unprofessional and we are really working hard at getting a professional organisation and it is incidents like these which take away from the hard work of officers as we seek to build a professional organisation."
