Warner launches new traffic plan today

Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner will today launch his Ministry's proposed traffic plan for West Port of Spain, which will come into effect next month.

The experimental traffic scheme is set for a three-month trial period from July 16. It will be launched at 1 p.m. today at Adam Smith Square, Woodbrook by Warner.

The new plan will see Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook being converted to allow one-way traffic going west, while Tragarete Road would be used for one-way traffic heading east.

In addition to the conversion of Ariapita Avenue and Tragarete Road, other traffic control measures will also be enforced.

Several business owners and employees along Ariapita Avenue last week expressed doubt about the new plan, saying it would deter customers.

A number of people said the plan will cause confusion and were certain that motorists would flout the law, causing further congestion on the roadway.

Employees along the Avenue and Tragarete Road who use public transport also complained that they will now have to walk further to reach their places of employment.
