The seizure was made after the container was scanned using an electronic scanning device by officials of the Customs and Excise Division. Sources told the Express the weapons—three AK-47 assault rifles, two 9 mm Sub-machine guns —and a large quantity of assorted ammunition were found hidden inside a container carrying household items. The container, which did not appear to have been tampered with before it was opened by Customs officers, was consigned to the couple, aged 33 and 30, who are from East Trinidad. Speaking at the Police Service daily media briefing, Customs Comptroller Fitzroy John did not divulge information on the seizure or the arrest of the suspects. John, who was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson, said the couple are expected to face charges in connection with the arms and ammo find within the next 48 hours and other persons are being sought. He added that a contingent of Customs and police officers have interviewed several persons, following the discovery, which led to the arrest of the couple. John said Customs were keeping a close eye on containers suspected to be involved in illicit trafficking and he was not aware of consignment with contraband slipping pass Customs officials. |
