KALICHARAN and Associates yesterday won the San Fernando Band of the Year (Large) title for the seventh consecutive time, with its presentation Rise of the Olympians.

The announcement was made at a news briefing at City Hall, San Fernando.

Bandleader Wendy Kalicharan said she was elated with the achievement.

Kalicharan said the band had now won the title on 20 occasions, and seven times in a row.

President George Maxwell Richards and his wife, Jean Ramjohn-Richards, played with the band on Carnival Monday.

Kalicharan said the President's decision encouraged parents with children and business owners to become more involved in the mas.

Kalicharan said of the win, "It is an awesome feeling. I am elated by our victory. We were nearly sold out before the President confirmed that he would play mas in San Fernando with us. It was a good idea to lift the culture in San Fernando."

Aaron Kalicharan, son of Wendy and Ivan Kalicharan, said they already had a couple of ideas for mas in 2014 and were considering the theme and colour scheme.

San Fernando Mayor Navi Muradali said he was happy the San Fernando Carnival Committee received $2 million this year.

He said he was concerned that San Fernando lacked enough bleachers, bins and toilets, but had managed with the little resources.

Muradali said: "We have $2 million to share among the bandleaders and masqueraders. Where the Carnival Committee only gives to the first three placing winners, we are hoping to distribute to everyone, accordingly."
