A MONUMENT in honour of the nation’s first prime minister, Dr Eric Williams, will soon be erected in San Fernando.
A sod-turning ceremony for the monument took place at Harris Promenade, San Fernando, yesterday.
Attending the function were San Fernando Mayor Dr Navi Muradali and chairman of the Eric Williams Memorial Committee, Reginald Vidale.
Muradali said: “I repeat my call for Dr Eric Williams and all of our national figures to be remembered and respected via our schools’ curriculum, Our children need to know about the persons who shaped our society and this is why we have built a museum in the city of San Fernando with artefacts belonging to Dr Eric Williams, former president Noor Hassanali and other great statesmen.”
I do hope that the next city council, regardless of its political composition, will continue the Dr Eric Williams monument project and allocate more spaces on Harris Promenade and the boardwalk to other great icons.”
Vidale said he was grateful that Williams will be honoured in South Trinidad.
“It is a historic occasion that Dr Williams is being recognised in a meaningful way. I knocked at doors in the North, I knocked at doors in Tobago and it was Dr Muradali who would open the door so that the country once and for all can remember the father of the nation, Dr Eric Eustace Williams.”
On August 15, Muradali and Vidale commemorated a plaque in memory of Williams at the Promenade.
Vidale said he received a quick response from Muradali after he asked for space to establish a monument to Williams during the unveiling of the bust to Venezuelan national hero Simon Bolivar, which was held six weeks earlier.
The Williams plaque was unveiled in the vicinity of other contributors to freedom and democracy, Jamaican Marcus Garvey and Indian Mahatma Gandhi.
Southern artist Willie Chen was the main designer for the monument, which Vidale said was a “work of art depicting certain aspects of Williams’ life”.
Vidale said he will be looking for sponsorship from business places for the memorial.
The Belgrove Group of Companies will be assisting in establishing the base for the structure.
