Woman charged in son's death sent to St Ann's

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

THE mother charged with killing her son by allegedly hanging him was sent yesterday to St Ann's Hospital to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Defence attorney Owen Hinds Jnr made the request yesterday when Marcia Harper reappeared in the San Fernando First Magistrates' Court.

She faced Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington.

The State was represented by attorney Marcia Lyons and Hinds was in high praise for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in San Fernando for the "haste in appointing a prosecutor".

On November 16, Harper first appeared in court charged by Cpl Beharry that at Ste Madeleine she murdered eight-year-old De'Mario Raghunanan.

De'Mario, a standard two pupil, was found hanging from a curtain in a bedroom of the family's home.

Yesterday, Hinds asked that Harper be remanded for psychiatric evaluation.

The case was adjourned to December 28.
