A WOMAN whose husband died six months ago, appeared in court yesterday charged with stealing costume jewelry and tissue paper.
Kamaldai Lalla, of Freeport, pleaded guilty to three offences which allegedly occurred at Gulf City Mall, La Romaine, on Saturday.
Lalla, 21, was jointly charged with 29-year-old Rae Ann Ramesar, who said she was not guilty of the offences.
The women appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Magistrates' Court.
It was alleged that the women stole a pair of Ray-Ban polarised sunglasses valued at $2,626, five pairs of fashion earrings totalling $150 and a pack of Mac cleansing towelettes valued at $175.
The women were charged by security guard, estate constable Briggs.
Defence attorney Jason Jackson said the items were recovered in the mall's parking lot and offered an explanation for Lalla's actions after she entered the guilty plea.
"Six months ago, she lost her husband. There has been much hardship by the defendant," he said.
The written information regarding the offences were unavailable yesterday and the matters were adjourned to today.
Jackson asked that Lalla remain on the bail she had been placed over the weekend.
He said if his client had wanted to flee, she could have done so after she was granted bail at the police station, or she could have stayed away from court yesterday.
The women were allowed to remain on $15,000 own bail and are expected back before the court today.
