$2.5m in ganja seized in Toco
APPROXIMATELY $2.5 million in compressed marijuana was seized by Eastern Division officers and officers of the Defence Force in Toco on Saturday afternoon.
Arrested in connection with the find was a 38-year-old man from East Dry River in Port of Spain.
Officers said they were on duty at L'Anse Noire Village around 4 p.m., when they noticed the driver of a white Nissan AD wagon acting in a suspicious manner after spotting them.
Police said, based on the reaction of the driver and several crocus bags which they saw in the vehicle, they had cause to stop the car after which a search was carried out.
During the search, officers said they found ten crocus bags containing 75 packages of marijuana weighing a total of 115 kilogrammes in the back seat and trunk of the vehicle.
The exercise was supervised by Snr Supt Dianand Naipaul and ASP Odette Lewis. Also included in the exercise were Sgt Ramlakhan, Cpls Garcia, Vialva and PCs Baptiste and Calicharan among others.
The man who was arrested has since been charged with possession of the drugs for the purpose of trafficking and will appear before a Sangre Grande magistrate sometime today.
