'Abandoned' pitbull hacked to death

By Susan Mohammed susan.mohammed@trinidadexpress.com

A PITBULL was hacked to death, and another was captured, after they ran amok in Couva yesterday.

The two pitbulls, a male and a female, were found loose at a house at McBean.

The owner of the property grabbed a cutlass and dealt several blows and chops to the male pitbull and it died at the scene.

The female dog fled into nearby bushes.

Public relations officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Canine Advocates (TTCA) Jean Claude Al-Jmayel was called in and caught the female dog using a fishing net and a leash.

Al-Jmayel said the TTCA condemned the acts of neglecting, mistreating and abandonment of the dogs.

"We urge the public to refrain from abandonment of their animals, as the kennels and animal welfare organisations are overwhelmed with these cases.

"We look forward to the continued cooperation with the Law Reform Commission and the AG's office in the writing and implementation of proper dog ownership legislation that would focus on responsible ownership," he said.
