The Congress of the People (COP) would like to see its former leader turned Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Dookeran installed as the new President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Speaking after the party's national council meeting at the COP Operation Centre in Charlieville yesterday, leader Prakash Ramadhar said while they have not yet asked Dookeran if he welcomed the nomination, they would like to see him in the nation's highest office.
Ramadhar said there has never been a question mark regarding Dookeran's integrity, honesty or honour. With Presidential selection set for February 15, Dookeran's name has been added to a list that reportedly includes Speaker of the House of Representatives Wade Mark, Queen's Counsel Karl Hudson-Phillips and Senior Counsel Kenneth Lalla.
Current President George Maxwell Richards ends his second term in mid-March. The deadline for nominations is February 5.
"Dookeran personifies in the mind of many, the sort of person the country needs now more than ever," Ramadhar said.
