The multi-billion-dollar Point Fortin highway will be built as originally designed, Works and Infrastructure Minister Emmanuel George has said.

George said, "The highway from San Fernando to Point Fortin will be built and I will proceed along the alignment that was originally advised."

George made the statement at the post- Cabinet press conference on Thursday at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's, where his colleagues, Housing Minister Roodal Moonilal and Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, came out in full support of the action taken by Warner to instruct law enforcement to demolish the Debe campsite of the Re-Route Movement on Wednesday.

George reiterated that millions were being lost daily when the protesters were occupying State land.

He said he will know the full figures as to how much money was being lost after his meeting today with National Infrastructure and Development Co (NIDCO) chairman Carson Charles.

George said that Warner's action was justified.

He said deadline dates set for the project as well as contractual obligations must be looked at.

The Minister added that there was a "silent majority" of people who live in the affected area who embrace the project.

He said there are many professionals and entrepreneurs in the area who want to expand their business and the project is not intended to destroy agriculture but to diversity the economy.
