'Street hustler' killed in accident

A man described by police as a "street hustler" was killed after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment in Arima on Friday.

According to police around 6 p.m. Anthony "Deadly" Garcia of Thomas Trace, Arouca was attempting to cross the Priority Bus Route (PBR) while riding his bicycle, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by the soldier.

At the time of the accident, police said the driver of the white station wagon which struck the victim was proceeding east along the roadway on the green lights near Railway Road, Arouca. Thomas, police said, attempted to ride from north to south of the roadway, between two maxi-taxis, when he was struck.

He was thrown into a nearby drain along the eastern side of the roadway and died at the scene.

The soldier was interviewed and his vehicle towed to the nearby Arouca Police Station pending investigations being conducted by Sgt Noriega.

He faces charges of illegal use of the PBR, police said.

Also visiting the scene was ASP Joseph of the Northern Division.
