$.5m for Amerindian Heritage week celebrations

Cabinet yesterday approved $500,000 for the celebration of Amerindian Heritage week.

This was disclosed by Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, Clifton De Coteau at yesterday's post-Cabinet media conference.

The Minister said the First People's community's main focus was getting legal title to the 25,000 acres of land which had been given to them by the Government.

On Sunday at the launch of Amerindian Heritage week, Hernandez-Bharath had said that it was an insult to First People that on the eve of the launch of the celebration, the Government was still to decide on its financial allocation for the festival.

The festival had to be postponed by a week because of late funding. "Others who came after have been given suitable recognition," he had said.
