THE relative of one of the persons killed by police officers in Moruga three months ago expressed relief yesterday after learning six officers who were bring probed had been arrested.
Abigail Johnson, Allana Duncan and Kerron Eccles were shot and killed on the night of July 22 at the intersection of Gunness Trace and Rochard Douglas Road, Barrackpore.
The police version of the killings is that around 8.50 p.m. officers of the Southern Division Homicide were told that a suspect wanted in connection with a double murder was seen in a white B-15 Sentra at St Mary's Village.
The officers reported that they intercepted the vehicle at the intersection near Singh's Auto Clinic. Officers said they were fired upon, and they returned fire in self-defence.
When they checked, three people were bleeding from gunshot wounds and they were taken to the Princes Town Health Centre, where they were pronounced dead. Police claim that they recovered a pistol.
Duncan's father, Anderson, 50, said yesterday he was relieved that the police officers were held.
"I feel different now because her killers were walking about all the time and having a field day and she is dead in a hole. She didn't deserve what happened at all," he said.
"I had many sleepless nights because my daughter just disappeared. And her killers are just walking about the place and nothing was being done. I am just waiting to see what will happen now, but I am happy the arrests were actually made."
Anderson said the Police Service needed to conduct its duties in accordance with the law.
He said, "The police need to be more professional. They were looking for X but they killed the wrong set of people. My daughter came out of the car and put up her hands and they still killed the girl."
He said were it not for the visits from the head of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) Gillian Lucky, he would have felt hopeless that nothing was being done in the case.
A representative of the PCA called him yesterday to confirm news of the arrests.
