...Sales increase in North and South

So far, powder has not really been fogging up the sales.

The Express took to the streets of Port of Spain to check out pharmacies and cosmetic stores in order to determine how influential two of this year's most popular soca songs – Machel Montano's "The Fog" and SuperBlue's Fantastic Friday – was having on the demand for the popular toiletry product.

Out of four drug stores along Independence Square and Frederick Street, only one, Rahma Pharmacies, reported that they had seen an upsurge, causing them to restock supplies faster than usual.

A quick check, via telephone, to several San Fernando pharmacies also showed not too many people in the southland were spending unusually on powder.

"I'd say since about Soca Monarch semi-finals with SuperBlue people have been buying a lot of powder to go partying," the Rahma's purchasing manager, who preferred not to be named, said.

She said the popular parenting staple Johnson's Baby Powder seemed to be the product of choice, mainly because it was cheaper.

Cosmetics retailer Pennywise also reported strong sales.

One of the managers at the Charlotte Street branch, Lisa Baptiste said the company had received requests for orders of cases of powders – almost one thousand individual units.

She said every day the branch had to put in more requests to the main warehouse for more stock.

"The demand has been up for about three weeks now, especially since Soca Monarch semis; people are buying for SuperBlue," she said.
