Deputy Political Leader of the United National Congress Suruj Rambachan has said that a Sunday Express report on the performance of Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar "smacks of political inventiveness supportive of a few failed politicians hoping to stage a comeback".
He was responding to the launch of MP Monitor, a new investigative series in the Sunday Express which will track the performance of Members of Parliament throughout the 41 constituencies.
The series began in the constituency of Siparia where Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been the MP since 1995.
Rambachan in a statement to the Express on Sunday said the Express failed to take note of the extensive amount of work done (including roads paved) in Siparia as well as the plans announced by the Prime Minister and her Ministers for improving the quality of life and delivery of services.
"In fact in every electoral area of her constituency work is being done by the Regional Corporations. Further, she has announced plans for the new Siparia market, a Technology Centre at Clarke Road, a specialist hospital in Penal, the Penal/Debe Administrative Complex and major Community Centre Complex at Bunsee Trace amongst others. The lack of objectivity in the article betrays the true intent of the reporter," said Rambachan.
"I expect that there will be many more political attacks upon the Prime Minister and Political Leader of the UNC as we approach the internal elections. In addition, she has disappointed many of her critics by the sterling and decisive leadership qualities she has demonstrated in stabilising the economy and together with her Ministers putting it on the path of growth once again," said Rambachan.
Rambachan said Persad-Bissessar's critics remain stunned "by the way she has successfully managed the coalition and partnership"
"Her skills at negotiating solutions to problems and issues that face any coalition in any part of the world has also meant that her detractors have again been disappointed since they believed that she could not keep the partnership together. Not only has the UNC grown stronger but the partnership has also grown stronger as a government," said Rambachan.
