... James: Actions of a bully

Why is Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar coming down strong on Tobago House of Assembly (THA) projects?

This question was asked yesterday by political scientist Winford James in commenting on the PM's decision to halt projects and request a probe related to two projects of the PNM-led THA.

"There are any number of questions raised on projects in Trinidad but we have not heard of the Prime Minister stopping any projects until an investigation is carried out. So the question is why is she coming down strong on the THA projects?

"She probably has convinced herself that in stopping the projects, it is going to turn opinion against the PNM. She is also probably persuaded that the motivation to stop the project is well-founded, that the investigation will find that there is impropriety. That is a political action in the sense that she is hoping that the investigation would make the THA which is controlled by the PNM look bad.

"But it just looks to me like the action of a bully, an abuse of power. We are talking about the gearing up for the THA elections here," James said.
