The report of the Commission of Enquiry into the 1990 attempted coup is expected to be laid in Parliament today.
The report was handed over to President Anthony Carmona yesterday morning by the members of the Commission at his St Ann’s office and by yesterday afternoon a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said: “The report was raised at today’s meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) held at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair.
“Mrs Persad-Bissessar told members of the Council that she would be laying the report at (today’s) sitting of the House of Representatives.”
In 2011 Persad-Bissessar recommended to former president George Maxwell Richards the appointment of a Commission of Enquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the 1990 attempted coup in which 24 persons were killed and millions of dollars in property was destroyed.
“The Prime Minister also thanked Commission Chairman, Sir David Simmons, and the other members for the work they had put into the Enquiry, which resulted in the presentation of the report today. The other members of the Commission were, Sir Richard Cheltenham, Dr Hafizool Mohammed, Eastlyn Mc Kenzie, and Diana Mahabir-Wyatt,” the statement added.
