Keshorn Walcott rewrote the record books when he became only the second T&T athlete to earn an Olympic gold medal.

Thirty-six years after Hasely Crawford won T&T's first gold medal, Walcott produced a huge 84.58 metres effort in the second round of the men's javelin to win gold.

The 19-year-old Toco thrower set a new national record in the first round with a throw of 83.51m before improving the mark with his second round effort.

He faulted on his third effort, threw 80.64m on his fourth and faulted on his penultimate throw, to remain in the gold medal position.

Gold was eventually assured when Ukrainian Oleksandr Pyatnytsya, the last thrower with an opportunity to surpass Walcott in the final round, could only muster an 83.53 effort.

In addition to setting a new national record and winning T&T's second Olympic gold, Walcott now holds the distinction of being the country's first field athlete to medal at the Olympic as well as the youngest ever Olympic javelin gold medallist.
