Kerry on fire in ‘Lease’

By BY Shammi Kowlessar

KYLE KERRY was in tremendous form when the Lease Operators Limited Junior Tennis Tournament continued yesterday at Trinidad Country Club, Maraval.

After overwhelming Ethan Wong 4-0, 4-1 in the quarterfinals, the national under-10 champion was even more impressive in the semifinals as national age-group runner-up David Rodriguez failed to trouble the scorer.

Charles Devaux booked his place in today’s title match with a 5-3, 5-3 triumph over Sebastian Sylvester.

After disposing of Liam Sheppard 4-0, 4-0 in the under-12 quarters, Samuel West halted Ethan Jeary 4-1, 5-3, the same score posted by Aidan Carter in the other semifinal against national age-group champ Kaiell George.

In a re-match of the girls’ under-12 final of last month’s Catch National Junior Championships, Victoria Koylass prevailed again when she nosed out Guatemalan Kristen Marticorna 1-4, 4-2, 10/8. And Yin Lee Assang defeated Solange Skeene 5-3, 4-0 for the other place in today’s title match.

Adam Escalante denied Tobagonian Kobe James 6-4, 6-5 and Che Andrews halted Flynn Von Waldau to reach the under-14 final, while in the girls’ equivalent semis, Osenyonye Nwokolo edged Jade Tom Yew 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Lily Lanser was a 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 winner over Brianna Lawrence.

Top seed and defending champ Scott Hackshaw rolled into the under-16 final with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Tobagonian Joshua Arnold, while Ryan Thomas got there by beating Timothy Davis 6-2, 6-3.

Davis’ sister Emma, the two-time defending national under-14 champ, surprisingly lost the first set before battling back to defeat Anya King 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the under-18 semis.

The No. 2 seed will square off against Emma Rose Trestrail for the title today after the top-seeded national under-16 and 18 champ beat Cheyenne Chin Choy 6-3, 6-2. First serve on the final day of the two-weekend tournament is 9 a.m.
