Dethroned Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) Premier Division champions PowerGen Sports closed off their league campaign with an emphatic ten-wicket win over Munroe Road Cricket Club at Munroe Road Ground, yesterday.
Left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh took four wickets for 53 runs and five for 44 as Munroe Road were dismissed for 126 and 113. PowerGen made 210 and 23 without loss.
Despite the win, PowerGen had to settle for third place behind the Parkites, who were second and Merry Boys who clinched the title in the penultimate round of the competition on the previous weekend.
The defeat pushed Munroe Road to second from last on the standings while Moosai’s draw against Jenexcon Tableland in their final round match helped them to finish tenth.
Seenath’s Auto Bamboo Sports who lost to Queen’s Park Cricket Club on day one of their contest on Saturday, finished last.
The bottom three teams on the 12-team standings are set to be demoted to the lower division, however Moosai could still stay in the top club competition if the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board implements the proposed restructuring of the National League competition ahead of the start of the 2015 season.
The proposed restructure will see the creation of an eight-team Premier 2 made up of the bottom two Premier Division teams, who will be joined by the three winners and runners up of the Championship Divisions.
Having lost the League title, PowerGen will now turn their attention to the defence of their Twenty20 crown in the NGC T20 Festival at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.
PowerGen will face Munroe Road in their quarterfinal tomorrow.
Today, the Parkites face Caldrac Club from 3 p.m. in the first Premier Division T20 quarterfinal while the League champions Merry Boys face Clarke Road in the second match from 7 p.m.
