Hosts Trinidad and Tobago avoided the ignominy of finishing last in the recently concluded NACRA Cup, thumping Cayman Islands 45-9 at Hasely Crawford Stadium on Saturday to finish fifth in the six-team competition.
T&T were not in the running for the main silverware on the final day of the tournament on Saturday, having already lost to Pool A opponents USA South and eventual winners Mexico.
In the Plate final—effectively the fifth place playoff—T&T scored in the first minute via a 40-metre dash from fullback Sebastian Navarro.
The home side added two more tries within 20 minutes, with the Islanders responding with penalty kicks.
T&T were always the stronger team, though and strolled to victory to end the tournament on a winning note, having already been beaten 17-3 by the Mexicans in the group stage, and narrowly by USA South, who won 19-17.
Mexico triumphed over Pool A winners Barbados on Saturday, a 17-10 triumph handing them the NACRA Cup. As group runners-up, in the “Bowl” playoff for third spot, USA South eased to a 32-10 win over Jamaica.
