The Walcott brothers, Keshorn and Elton, struck gold for Trinidad and Tobago on the second day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, yesterday.
Keshorn was first to the rostrum, the 17-year-old athlete topping the field in the boys' under-20 javelin with a 67.01 metres throw, a new national junior record. Mexico's David Ocampo Bravo (63.44m) and Puerto Rico's Kenny Mendez de Jesus (62.40m) earned silver and bronze, respectively.
Elton followed in his younger brother's footsteps with victory in the boys' under-20 triple jump. He jumped 15.42m. Mexican Alberto Alvarez (15.21m) and Jasson Castro (14.87m) of Honduras picked up the minor medals. Another T&T athlete, Seon Michael Stafford was fourth with a 14.73m jump.
There was gold as well for T&T in the boys' 4x100m relay. Jamol James, Sabian Cox, Moriba Morain and Shermund Allsop combined for victory in 39.77 seconds, a new CAC Junior Championship record. Jamaica finished second in 40.07, while third spot was copped by Dominican Republic (40.36).
T&T's Machel Cedenio seized silver in the boys' under-17 400m in 48.12 seconds. Jamaica's Lennox Williams triumphed in 47.94, while bronze was bagged by Barbadian Jerrard Mason in 48.13. Cedenio's teammate, Theon Lewis clocked 49.98 to finish sixth.
Robert Collingwood secured silver for T&T in the boys' under-20 shot put. He threw the iron ball 17.75m, forcing his teammate, Quincy Wilson to settle for bronze with a 17.43m effort. Jamaica's Chad Wright was the class of the field, grabbing gold with a big 18.32m throw.
T&T quarter-miler Deon Lendore bagged boys' under-20 400m bronze in 47.16 seconds. The top two spots were earned by Venezuela's Omar Longart Rondon (46.75) and Luguelin Santos (46.94) of Dominican Republic. Another T&T athlete, Kishon Dempster was seventh in 48.60.
The T&T girls' under-20 4x100m team--Breanna Gomes, Kai Selvon, T'Keyah Dumoy and Gabriela Cumberbatch--claimed bronze in 45.55 seconds. Jamaica won in 45.03, beating Bahamas (45.54) into second spot.
And there was bronze as well for T&T in the boys' under-17 4x100m. Breon Mullings, Ayodele Taffe, Jereem Richards and John-Mark Constantine got around the track in 41.98 seconds. Jamaica (40.88) and Bahamas (41.72) earned gold and silver, respectively.
Going into the third and final day of the Championships, today, 15 medals are in the T&T bag--seven gold, two silver and six bronze.
