12 gold medals for T&T

Field athletes Quincy Wilson and Hezekiel Romeo led the charge for Trinidad and Tobago on the third and final day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, yesterday.

Romeo captured the boys' under-17 shot put title with a record-breaking throw and Wilson did the same in the boys' under-20 discus, as T&T finished with 12 gold medals, six silver and nine bronze for a grand total of 27.

T&T finished third on the medals table. Jamaica triumphed with 25 gold medals, 20 silver and 18 bronze, while Mexico were second with 16 gold medals, eight silver and four bronze.

T&T claimed second spot on the points table with 267 points. Jamaica (483) finished first and Bahamas (201.5) third.

"We're extremely pleased," T&T manager Michelle Stoute-Lopez told the Express, yesterday. "The camp is satisfied. All were committed and gave their all.

"The under-17s," the manager continued, "have shown we have quite a batch to fill the shoes of those who are moving out of juniors. And I'm pleased by the females."

T&T's haul of 12 gold medals is the country's second best showing in the 32-year history of the Championships. Only the 2004 team, with 14 gold medals, enjoyed a more successful CAC Junior Championships.

Romeo was in superb form yesterday, bettering 17 metres with five of his six throws. It was in the fourth round that he produced his best effort on the day, 17.46m, a new meet record and an improvement on his national record. Jamaicans Chadwick Dacosta (16.98m) and Kashif Ford (16.83m) earned silver and bronze, respectively. Romeo's teammate, Shervorne Worrell (14.42m) finished sixth.

Wilson's winning throw in the boys'under-20 discus was 62.93m, a new CAC Junior Championship record, the T&T thrower bettering the old standard by more than ten metres! Jamaicans Chad Wright (60.50m) and Traves Smikle (57.20m) were second and third, respectively, while fourth spot was copped by T&T's Richard Collingwood (55.14m).

Moriba Morain, Domonique Williams and the boys' under-20 4x400m team also struck gold for T&T yesterday.

Morain captured the boys' under-20 200m title in 21.26 seconds. Jamaican Brandon Tomlinson (21.58) earned silver and Venezuela's Arturo Ramirez Alvarez (21.71) secured bronze.

Williams emerged victorious in the girls' under-17 800m, the T&T athlete returning a time of two minutes, 13.09 seconds. Vanessa Philbert (2:13.64)of Netherlands Antilles and Barbadian Sonia Gaskin (2:14.42) finished second and third, respectively.

And in the boys' under-20 mile relay, Kishon Dempster, Deon Lendore, Osei Alleyne-Forte and one-lap hurdles champion Jehue Gordon combined for gold in 3:08.19. Jamaica (3:09.18) and Dominican Republic (3:10.55) claimed the minor medals.

Alena Brooks and Jessica James were second and third, respectively, in the girls' under-20 800m, the T&T athletes clocking 2:09.29 and 2:09.80. Jamaica's Natoya Goule topped the field in 2:07.20.

Kai Selvon snapped up silver for T&T in the girls' under-20 200m in 23.42 seconds. Allison Peter of the US Virgin Islands triumphed in 23.32, and Fany Chalas of Dominican Republic finished third in 23.94.

The T&T girls' under-20 4x400m combination of Sparkle McKnight, Gabriela Cumberbatch, Selvon and Brooks finished second in 3:38.49. Jamaica (3:34.41) and Bahamas (3:38.81) were first and third, respectively.

In the boys' under-17 4x400m, Theon Lewis, Jereem Richards, Mark London and Machel Cedenio earned silver for T&T in 3:17.54. Bahamas won in a meet record 3:16.30, while Jamaica (3:18.67) copped third spot.

London bagged bronze in the boys' under-17 3,000m. He clocked 9:18.34 to beat his teammate Nicholas Landeau (9:22.33) into fourth spot. Puerto Rico's Giancarlo Baez Mercado (9:09.62) captured the title, ahead of Mexico's Osmar Pacheco (9:12.32).

And in the girls' under-17 mile relay, Shirnelle Ettienne, Williams, Onika Murray and 300m hurdles champion Kernesha Spann secured bronze for T&T in 3:55.22. Jamaica (3:43.08) and Bahamas (3:51.27) claimed the top two spots.

Team T&T will return home tomorrow at four p.m.
