Trinidad and Tobago extended their unbeaten run and St Lucia shocked Barbados in a closely contested encounter as the Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) qualifiers continued at the Beausejour indoor facility here Monday night.
Trinidad and Tobago outclassed the Americans 49-34 despite a close first quarter which saw the Trinidadians leading by one goal, 12-11.
The Calypso Girls led at the remaining quarters, 23-18, 41-23, 49-34, a reflection of their dominance as the game progressed.
Goal shoot Anastasia Wilson had a game-high 37 goals from 41 attempts while goal attack Jolisa Cooper scored nine of 12 attempts.
Georgina Hibbert, playing as goal shoot for the US, converted 30 of 36 attempts and goal attack Petra Williams was successful with nine of her 12 attempts.
In what turned out to be a thrilling contest, hosts St Lucia beat Barbados 53-50 in a tough match where scores remained close throughout the encounter.
Barbados had the better of the early exchanges, going ahead 11-9 at the first quarter but improved passing, coupled with accurate shooting, brought St Lucia back into the match early in the second quarter, as they led 25-20.
They held on in the third quarter to lead 37-34 and then matched the Barbadians 16-16 in the final quarter to emerge on top.
St Lucia were in excellent shooting form with goal shoot Deidra Mathurin scoring 32 of 33 attempts and goal attack Shem Maxwell maintaining a 100 per cent record of 21 goals from 21 attempts.
Goal shoot Lydia Bishop was kept under pressure for the entire game by the St Lucian defence and was below her best, netting 29 of 35 attempts while goal attack Nikita Piggott scored 18 of 19 attempts.
In the other match on the penultimate night of competition, St Vincent and the Grenadines triumphed over Canada 53-48 despite the game being tied 26-26 at the end of the second quarter.
The Vincentians were leading 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, 41-35 after the third and 53-48 at the final buzzer.
Goal shoot Gailene Gordon shot 42 of 48 attempts while substitute goal attack Roseclair Hall was able to net ten of 11 attempts.
Goal shoot Sabrina Vesteeg topped all scorers in the match with 43 of 57 attempts for Canada.
