T&T batsmen give up good start against Guyana
Guyana leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo had a career-best bowling performance of seven for 67 but Trinidad and Tobago still closed the first day of their Regional Four-Day Championship final-round match at Guyana National Stadium on 274 for eight, already securing two bonus batting points.
Half centuries from left-handers Darren Bravo (61) and Evin Lewis (64) helped the visitors recover from 35 for one to reach 128 before Bishoo started to spin his magic.
After Lendl Simmons was caught at extra cover off Keon Joseph for 12 in the first session, Bishoo stepped in to get the other seven wickets to fall on the first day. Bishoo, who only came back into the side for the sick Veerasammy Permaul, got his first wicket after Lunch when he trapped Lewis lbw. Lewis faced 88 balls and hit eight fours and two sixes in his knock.
Bravo faced 112 balls and hit nine fours and a six before he, too, fell to leg-spinner via the lbw route. Imran Khan resisted towards the end of the day’s play with an unbeaten 37 as T&T passed 250 to earn a second bonus point.
In the other key game, Barbados were 167 for one at stumps replying to the Leeward Islands’ first innings of 94 all out. Ashley Nurse grabbed four for 24 to help dismiss the Leewards at Sir Vivian Richards Ground in Antigua before Kraigg Brathwaite’s unbeaten 73 and Omar Phillips’ 79 put the Bajans in control. They lead by 73 runs.
And the Jamaicans were also in some trouble against the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at 3Ws Oval in Barbados. Jamaica were dismissed for 182 thanks to Carlton Baugh’s 57 and Jerome Taylor’s 39 in the back end of the innings. CCC were 59 without loss at stumps with the competition’s leading scorer Shacaya Thomas on 33 not out.
