Akeal Hosein shines as trial ends

Akeal Hosein snatched five for 31 and scored an unbeaten 31 to help the Gibran Mohammed XI earn a draw against the Amit Jaggernauth XI in their three-day trial match which ended yesterday at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

Facing a 61-run first-innings deficit, Hosein rocked the Jaggernauth XI batsman in their second innings, bowling 14 overs, including four maidens, to help dismiss Jaggernauth's team for 167 off just 68.5 overs.

Only Jason Mohammed stood up to the left-arm orthodox spinner, top-scoring with 68 off 113 balls, He hit six fours and one six in his near two and a half hour stay at the crease.

Vikash Mohan was also among the runs, battling for 164 minutes for his 44 ,which came off 118 balls and included four boundaries as the Jaggernauth XI piled up a lead of 228.

Batting a second time, the Gibran Mohammed XI reached 82 for three off 27.2 overs, with Hosein facing 62 balls and batting for a little over an hour to ensure his team held on for a draw.

Hosein's Queen's Park Cricket Club teammate Khary Pierre was the best bowler for the Jaggernauth XI, taking two for 28 off 12 overs.
