Alexander, Sealy top youth awards

By Kern De Freitas

He picked up his third major award for 2011, but First Citizens Youth Sportsman of the Year Quincy Alexander is already looking forward to an even better 2012.

The cyclist added the accolade to his trophy cupboard on Friday night at the First Citizens Sports Foundation's second annual Youth Awards at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain, alongside the Ministry of Sport's Spirit of Sport Awards (SOSA) Emerging Athlete of the Year and Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee Junior Sportsman of the Year trophies.

The Youth Sportswoman of the Year was Monifa Sealy, who is currently away at college in the United States, and T&T Golf Association (TTGA) president Robert Costelloe collected on her behalf.

Alexander told the Express that, despite his success, he is looking forward to continued improvement on the track. And he started well on Saturday, clocking 11.2 seconds in strong winds in the Flying 200-metre event at the Arima Velodrome.

"You always have (great) expectations (after success)," Alexander said, "but my approach always remains the same...that is you train hard, focus on the events and don't study the pressure. You don't want to study what the fans say, or put yourself under extra pressure. If it's working, why change it?"

The 2011 Junior Pan American Games match sprint champion was "inspired" by Friday's award, which he described as the "biggest" for a local sportsman.

"This was all three years of preparation and we got it right in 2011. I didn't really know the other contenders. I was just looking at (swimmer Joshua) Romany, but my name was called. (but) to sum it up, this award is really inspiring. To get an award from (the First Citizens Sports Foundation) is overwhelming."

The competition was stiff for the main awards at Friday's function. Among them, Alexander and volleyball's Channon Thompson returned to the top ten for the second year running. Paralympic swimmer Shanntol Ince, who was last year's Most Outstanding Paralympic athlete, this time joined the overall top ten.

Joshua Johnson (chess), shot putter Hezekiel Romeo, netball's Kalifa McCollin, Sealy, Jodi Goodridge (cycling), and Romany line up with young table tennis talent Aaron Wilson.

There was also a special place for T&T's Special Olympians.

Shaddai Simon, the young SOSA winner for Athlete with a Disability (Intellectual) for his golden showjumping display at the 2011 Special Olympics, was named alongside the swimming pair of Makiba Baptiste and Nikoli Lalla.

La Toya Charles (athletics), Kevon Rampersad (athletics), Giselle Benjamin (equestrian), Kevin Hunte (basketball), Nyron Noel (football), Damian Marquis (powerlifting) and Janelle Francis (volleyball) were the other awardees.
