Another Horse of the Year title on the cards for 'Bruce'

By The Guru

WITH three racedays remaining in this year's racing season, Saturday's Stewards Cup winner, Bruceontheloose, who was beaten once this year by Strikes Not Spares in the President's Cup, has to be the overwhelming favourite to cop another Horse of the Year title at next year's Jetsam Awards ceremony.

A winner of five of his six starts from March to December, the one-eyed giant has towered over his opposition. His victories in the 1,350-metre Diamond Stakes on September 24, and in Saturday's 1,200-metre Grade One Stewards Cup, shouldering 56.5 kilos to success, were significant for the creole against the imported horses.

'Bruce' became the only horse in Trinidad and Tobago history to earn $3 million in purse moneys when landing Saturday's Stewards Cup. This has to put him in a different league to the other top class horses that have graced Santa Rosa Park, including Sian's Gold, Vandross, Infallibility, Top Of The Class, Sugar Mike, Adawar, and Chanticleer.

'Bruce' is gutsy, and for a horse with such tremendous speed to carry around two turns is admirable.

Onto the main track, yesterday, which remained sloppy. Trainers did not press their charges, choosing instead to pace them.

Trainer Harold Chadee, who brought down the curtain on last day's card with Bonnie, paced his St Ann's Stakes nominee, She's A Cutie with Zun Zum, and they returned a handy 53.38 over 800 metres with Zun Zum finishing ahead of the unbeaten She's A Cutie.

Derby winning trainer, Derick Mosca, who was winless last Saturday, sent out his trio of Sweet Genius, Uncle Max and Ex-Beneficial Bartok over 400 metres, and they turned in a good 24.56. Sweet Genius could be the one to follow from Mosca's barn.
