Army moving up

Fifth after Rangers win

By Ian Prescott Ian.prescott@trinidadexpress.com

THE CHAMPIONS Defence Force are on the move and are now  fifth in the Digicel Pro League after striker Richard Roy made use of a rare start on Thursday  to net  a pair of goals in a 5-1 defeat of cellar positioned St. Ann’s Rangers at Marvin Lee Stadium.

Defence Force Force now have 23 points from 14 matches, having played three less matches than a trio of teams chasing front-runners W Connection (37 points). Tomorrow, the Army play a fourth match in seven days, and will look to make up further ground when they travel to the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva for a difficult 6 p.m. match against the in-form Point Fortin Civic team. They also have outstanding matches against Police, Civic and leaders W Connection.

Rangers have lost 16 of  17 matches this season, their only win being a 3-2 defeat of Defence Force in the first round. There was no repeat this time. Sixteen-year-old Jair Toussaint scored a consolation goal for the very young Rangers team, but by then they were already four goals down and beaten.

With coach Ross Russell using just one point man, Roy has had few starts ahead of regular starting forward Devorn Jorsling. But Roy opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a low shot past goalie Terrence Lewis following a defensive breakdown, and also put away a shot following Dave Long’s pass in the second half.

Between Roy’s goals, wide midfielder Kerry Joseph scored at the back post and Josimar Belgrave scored the rebound after goalie Lewis dropped the ball. Toussaint, a member of Rangers’ successful 2013 Youth Pro League championship team scored after Army ‘keeper Kevin “Barthez” Graham parried a shot towards him. But later,  the four-goal cushion was restored when another occasional player, Balondemu Julius scored after taking a cross from substitute Jorsling.
