BIG WIN FOR QPCC

Darren Bravo, Ramdin hit 100s on opening day

By Roger Seepersad

Queen's Park Cricket Club batsman Darren Bravo and T&TEC wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin both spanked centuries to lead their respective clubs to easy victories on the opening day of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Sunday League competition yesterday.

Bravo scored an unbeaten 126 to help defending Sunday League champions Queen's Park to a 163-run win over First Citizens Clarke Road in their Group A match at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain.

Ramdin hit 109 not out, which included seven fours and two sixes, to steer T&TEC to a four-wicket triumph over Moosai Sports in their Group B match at Sir Frank Worrell Ground, UWI, St Augustine.

At the Oval, left-hander Bravo faced 105 balls for his top-score, to lead the Parkites to an intimidating 303 for seven off their 50 overs. In reply, Clarke Road were dismissed for 140 in 36 overs.

Bravo, who was dropped twice before reaching his hundred, struck eight sixes, most of which went straight down the ground, and six fours, including an eye-catching cover drive off fast bowler Terry Edwards (0/47 from six overs).

Runako Morton also contributed to the big total, smashing 66 off 64 balls. He had two sixes and five fours.

Troy Gonsalves top-scored with 38 when Clarke Road batted, but the rest of the batsmen were not up to the challenge.

Marlon Barclay was the best bowler for the Parkites, taking three wickets for four runs, while spinner Sunil Narine picked up three for 33 and pacer Shannon Gabriel chipped in with two for 29.

At UWI, Ramdin also benefited from some loose fielding, being put down at least twice as he guided last year's semi-finalists to 254 for six in 47.4 overs after Moosai batted first and made 253 for six off their 50 overs.

Azrudeen Mohammed and T&TEC skipper Jason Mohammed also contributed to the chase, scoring 62 and 48, respectively.

The latest additions to Moosai's squad, Aneil Kanhai and Navin Stewart, did well on the opening day with Kanhai top-scoring with 60 and Stewart adding 43, but in the end they were let down in the field.

Action in the Sunday League continues today with the Parkites travelling to Esmeralda to face newly-promoted LLumar Esmeralda Sports, who lost their opener to SIS Central Sports yesterday, while T&TEC face Preysal at Inshan Ali Park.

All matches bowl off at 10 a.m.
