ToolsBa doubles up for NewcastleNewcastle secured their first Premier League win since October as two goals from Demba Ba yesterday and a brilliant strike from Gael Bigirimana cut down Wigan 3-0 at St James' Park. A run of four defeats and a draw sent the Magpies tumbling down the table and left manager Alan Pardew talking about a relegation battle. The mood on Tyneside was improved a shade, although it was far from a vintage display. Ba's first came from the penalty spot, after Maynor Figueroa had been shown a red card for a foul on Papiss Cisse. And the Senegalese made it two when pouncing on Ali Al-Habsi's failure to turn a long-range shot to safety. Wigan were the dominant force at the start of the second half, but they failed to turn the possession into end product and their hopes of a comeback were shot down when Gael Bigirimana stepped in off the right and curled a beauty into the top corner. |
