Back-to-back wins for Army, Valencia Heat

Defending champions Defence Force and Valencia Heat played unbeaten in back-to-back matches during a weekend that saw 12 matches contested in the Mackeson Super 10 Basketball League at various venues across the country.

The biggest victory was recorded by Valencia Heat who rallied to a 93-90 win over Caledonia Clippers in over-time on Saturday night at the Maloney Sports Complex. Twenty-four hours later, Valencia outplayed Sangre Grande All Stars 69-51 as the League made its debut with a double-header at the Mayaro Indoor Sports facility.

Saturday’s win was secured by Fabrice Fisher, who scored his team’s last seven points. He scored nine out of his team’s 13 in the five-minute overtime session.

Fisher recorded 31 points, a season-best for the game. Valencia led the first quarter 25-20, but were outscored in the second session 11-16 and they scorers were tied at the interval 36-36.

Caledonia again outscored the opposition 25-19 to fall behind 61-55 after the third stanza. However, it was in the fourth quarter that the excitement unfolded with Valencia getting the better of Caledonia 26-20 to level the scorers thanks to a Fisher’s basket on the buzzer which pushed the contest into over-time.

Centre Dwayne Virgil supported Fisher with 21 points and centre Michael Saunders added 11, while Wesley Vincent was Caledonia best with 18 points, centre Shawn Lawrence contributed 15, guard Dwayne Moses 14 and forward Kerry McMillan chipped in with ten.

Defence Force proved too much for the University of T&T defeating them 87-57 on Friday, and a day later, Mackeson Monarchs were over-powered 113-76. There were also wins for Petro Jazz and Detour Shak Attack along the way. There were also two wins for Petro Jazz which defeated Mackeson Monarchs 97-61 and Quarters United 91-72.
