FOUR Barbadian national players are competing alongside the likes of Kerwyn Pantin, Anil Seepaul and Nekeisha Blake in the Solo Beverages Open Badminton Championships at Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas.
The tournament served off at Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas, after press time last night and will conclude tomorrow.
The Bajan contingent is headed by multiple national champion Andre Padmore, who captured a triple crown in their national championships last weekend.
Compatriot Dakeil Thorpe is also in the 32-draw, while the women’s draw of 16 will include Barbados national champ Mariama Eastmond and her compatriot Shari Watson.
With three-time defending national champ Solangel Guzman out of the country, the women’s draw is wide open.
Jade Joseph and Kamasha Robertson are the seeded players, but five-time national champ Blake, who recently returned after being out with injury for two years, talented national under-17 champ Jada Renales and national under-19 champ Kristi-Reno Singh, runner-up in the last two editions of the National Championships, are also in the field.
Blake is the seeded second, but the defending and eighth-time national champ is the title favourite.
Alistair Espinoza, Keston Friday and Jason Ramjass are seeded first, third and fourth, respectively, but the field also includes Ramjass’ fellow former national under-19 champ Matthaus Wilford, reigning national under-19 champ Naim Mohammed and six-time national champ Seepaul.
There is also doubles, mixed doubles and veterans’ (over-40) draws in the tournament and first serve today is 11 a.m.
