Baptiste wins in Berlin

Trinidad and Tobago's athletes had a good day yesterday in European meets, with Kelly-Ann Baptiste sprinting to 100-metre victory and Cleopatra Borel securing shot put silver.

At the ISTAF Berlin, an IAAF World Challenge meet in Berlin, Germany, Baptiste clocked 11.25 seconds in -0.5 wind to take victory over Jamaican Kerron Stewart, who was second in 11.27. France's Myriam Soumare was third in 11.34.

The race also included Aleen Bailey of Jamaica (11.36), who finished fourth, and USA's Bianca Knight (11.36), who copped sixth spot.

In the other women's 100m race, Poland's Daria Korczynska was first in 11.64, ahead of Eva Baur (German, 11.86) and Montell Douglas (Great Britain, 12.01).

In Italy, Borel also landed a podium finish, her biggest throw of 18.71 metres putting her just behind Belarusian Natallia Mikhnevich. Mikhnevich won on her second throw of 18.80m.

Next round, Borel threw 18.71m to jump into second, but subsequent throws of 18.62, 18.27 and then 18.20m were not enough to overhaul her main competition.

Russia's Irinia Tarasova, with her best effort at 18.68m, was third.
