Big game

W Connection, Army draw 2-2

By BY Ian Prescott ian.prescott@trinidadexpress.com

It was a big game, a championship match and possibly a championship-winning result.

One sensed that season-long Digicel Pro League leaders Directv W Connection were the more satisfied side after twice coming from behind—including when a man short—to draw 2-2 with defending champions Defence Force on Friday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. W Connection now need just one win from their two remaining matches to win the 2013-2014 competition.

Friday’s marquee match-up between the Pro League’s top two teams might well have been one of the best matches of the season—riveting, with pace, purpose and good goals. Both contenders came prepared to play.

Defence Force looked to have claimed a decisive lead in the battle for the $1 million Pro League champions’ prize, when striker Devorn Jorsling found the bottom corner with low shot to put the defending champions into a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left. But just a minute later, right-back Alvin Jones grabbed 10-man W Connection a decisive point, when he pulled the pace-setters level for the second time.  Jones (A), the 19-year-old younger brother of T&T international Joevin Jones, then went pelting some 100 metres up-field and celebrated by grabbing a stunned ball-boy, who became engrossed in the team’s celebrations.

Even then, Defence Force only just failed to win full points when another Jorsling shot only just missed the corner again, in added-on time. It was that kind of thriller—a real treat for those who came. The result still leaves W Connection a point ahead with two matches to go. But Tuesday’s second meeting between the teams is now almost a final.

W Connection  forced the early action and outshot the Defence Force five to one in the first quarter hour. During that time, Colombian Christian Viveros was ruled offside and had a goal disallowed  in the ninth minute after putting a low shot inside the far corner. Dead-ball specialist  Jones (A) also twice threatened with a free-kick and  a volley which deflected
