Bovell third in Canada Cup 100 'free'

Trinidad and Tobago's Olympics-bound swimmer George Bovell bagged 100-metre freestyle bronze on Friday night at the annual Canada Cup in Montreal, his last competitive meet before heading to the Games later this month.

Bovell touched the wall in 49.90 seconds to finish third at Olympic Park Pool behind fellow Club Wolverine swimmers Milorad Cavic, who win in 49.32, and Robert Savulich, who was second in 49.58. Michael Wynalda was fourth in 50.75 as Club Wolverine swept the top four.

Bovell's 50m split of 23.33 was actually second only to Cavic, but he was only just overhauled by 24-year-old Savulich in the final lap.

In the heats, Bovell had the second best time of 50.66 in finishing second behind Cavic in Heat Six.

The T&T ace swimmer will go for gold again today, the final day of the meet in his pet event, the 50m freestyle, while he is also slated to compete in the 100m backstroke event.
