Breana Stampfli is Under-18 ITF champ again
BREANA STAMPFLI was the top Under-18 doubles player at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Caribbean Junior Circuit, which concluded yesterday at Shaw Park, Tobago.
The Trinidad and Tobago player reached the Under-18 finals of all three legs and captured her second title yesterday.
After they lost in the final of the middle leg the Friday before in St Vincent, second seeds Stampfli and Briton Mia Smith trounced top seeds Bahamians Simone Pratt 6-1, 6-3 for the title.
The left-handed Pratt brushed aside Stampfli in the singles finals of the first two legs, but ended up losing their two meetings in doubles in the series.
On their way to capturing the doubles crown in the opening leg in St Lucia, the three-time defending Tranquillity Open champion and Elysse Graci had beaten Pratt and her partner in the semi-finals.
Three weeks earlier, Stampfli combined with the American to win her very first ITF title in Jamaica, but they lost in the final the following week in Dominican Republic.
Stampfli and Smith lost last week’s final to Kylie McKenzie and Ryan Peus, but gained sweet revenge over the Americans in the semis two days ago.
McKenzie, who beat Stampfli in the quarters in singles, came from behind to defeat doubles partner Peus 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a battle of the unseeded players for the title yesterday.
After losing in the doubles final in St Vincent, fourth-seeded Tobago twins Joshua and Ty Abraham were beaten 6-1, 6-4 in yesterday’s semis by No 1 seeds Jean Thirouin of the United States and Canadian Jack Van Slyke.
The second-seeded Van Skyle had convincingly upset No 1 seed Thirouin 6-0, 6-4 a little earlier for the singles crown.
