West Indies batting star Chris Gayle was missing through injury but Royal Challengers Bangalore hardly put a foot wrong as they beat Delhi Daredevils by eight wickets, to open their Indian Premier League campaign on a positive note yesterday.
Set 146 for victory at the Sharjam Cricket Stadium, Royal Challengers encountered little difficulty in overhauling their target with 20 balls to spare.
With Gayle sidelined with a back problem, under-fire left-hander Yuvraj Singh took centre stage to blast an unbeaten 52 from 29 balls, which included three fours and five sixes.
He added 84 runs for the third wicket with captain Virat Kohli who stroked an effortless unbeaten 49 from 38 balls with two fours and three sixes.
Earlier, South Africa left-hander JP Duminy top scored with 67 not out and New Zealander Ross Taylor supported with an unbeaten 43 from 39 balls, to bolster Delhi’s innings, after they were sent in.
Gayle is expected to be fit for Royal Challengers’ second match tomorrow against Kieron Pollard’s Mumbai Indians.
